Glass icon - st. Elias

Title

Glass icon - st. Elias

Description

This 14x12cm icon of sf. Ilie (RO) is a contemporary - and, to be fair, minimalist - interpretation of the icons painted on glass common throughout the Romanian countryside, particularly Transylvania.
While I’ve only had it for a couple of years and it has existed for just as long, it tends to find itself in my luggage wherever I go for more than a few months: whether for how it sums up a fair proportion of rural visual culture, or its connection to common interpretations of St. Elijah as a master of weather and storms, it always reminds me of an imaginary, mythologised version of home.
